The Mukhi House Museum
THE MUKHI HOUSE MUSEUM HAS A FASCINATING HISTORY THAT GOES THROUGH SEVERAL CHAPTERS SINCE ITS CONSTRUCTION IN 1921
1921 - 1947: A Family Home
- Built by Jethanand Mukhi, a wealthy Sindhi Hindu businessman, the house served as a luxurious residence for the Mukhi family for about 26 years.
- The house was a center of social activity and even hosted prominent figures like former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
1947 - 1957: The Impact of Partition
- With the partition of India in 1947, many Sindhi Hindus, including a large portion of the Mukhi family, migrated to India.
- Though some family members continued to live in or visit the house until 1957, the property's occupancy started to dwindle.
1957 - 2008: Changing Hands and Deterioration
- After the Mukhi family's significant presence waned, the house went through a period of changing ownership.
- It came under the control of the Evacuee Trust Property Board and later housed various government entities, including a school.
- Unfortunately, due to neglect and changing use, the house suffered significant deterioration during this period.
2008 - 2020: Restoration and Transformation
- In a positive turn of events, the Mukhi family descendants agreed to relinquish claims on the house with the condition that it be restored and turned into a museum.
- The Sindh Department of Antiquities led a major restoration project, with Dr. Kaleemullah Lashari spearheading the effort.
- The project involved collaborating with the Mukhi family for historical accuracy and restoring the architectural beauty of the house.
2020 - Present: A Public Museum
- After extensive restoration, the Mukhi House Museum finally opened its doors to the public in 2020.
- Today, it stands as a testament to the Mukhi family's legacy and the architectural heritage of Hyderabad.
